The primary purpose of this position is to directly aid the Surgeon and other team members during surgical procedures. The Surgical Technologist does this by participating as an active member of the Surgical Team through involvement with preprocedural planning, day-of set up and implementation of complex equipment and instrumentation. They are an active participant during the procedure anticipating the Surgeons' needs to provide instrumentation throughout the procedure. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. GS-06: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-5 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes: knowledge of highly technical medical instruments, human anatomy, physiology, routine disease processes and aseptic technique to prepare and protect the sterile field during surgery; Knowledge of sterile technique must include sterilizer operations and tests to determine the effectiveness of sterilization, packing, storage, and shelf life; Knowledge of correct care and handling of pathology specimens is essential for the prevention of damage to or loss of specimens and eventual diagnoses. OR Applicants may substitute education for the experience required for the GS-06 level. 6 months of graduate education directly related to the Surgical Technician (i.e. Health technician, operating room experience, etc.), Experience would be assisting with non-complex surgeries, setting up sterile fields and training other professionals on equipment. Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at the GS-06 level *Prefer minimum 3 years surgical technician experience. *Prefer BLS experience. *Current Surgical Technician Certification. ["Major Duties include but not limited to: The incumbent sets up and operates various medical equipment, necessitating a working knowledge of all required equipment and instruments used for each procedure. These include, but are not limited to, LASERs, Microscopes, Laparoscopic/ Endoscopic cameras and associated equipment. Performs non-technical maintenance of equipment according to Manufacturers' Indications for Use to prevent malfunctions. Provides guidance and support to other Surgical Technologists and RN Circulating Nurses when requested to provide information and education as subject matter experts for their job role. Functions as a primary scrub person responsible for safely handling instruments, supplies, and complex equipment during all surgical procedures such as: gynecology, urology, ophthalmology, otolaryngology, plastic surgery, a full range of general surgery cases, minimally invasive procedures and orthopedic surgery including total joint replacements and revisions. Participates in all unit continuing education and in-servicing to ensure competency for the set-up, use, and care of all complex surgical equipment used in the facilities Operating Room. Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 0730-1600 or on call Position Description Title/PD#: Surgical Technician/12530A Physical Requirements: Duties regularly require providing manual assistance in lifting and positioning patients, most of whom are at stages of sedation or anesthesia induced unconsciousness. There are extensive periods of regular and recurring standing, walking, bending, lifting, pushing, reaching, and prolonged stretching to provide easy accessibility of instruments and supplies for the Surgeon as well as access to the surgical field. Incumbent must be dexterous in passing instruments to Surgeons without compromising the principles of aseptic technique and in a manner requiring little or no effort from the Surgeon. Utilizes appropriate assistive devices (i.e. lifts, transfer devices, other personnel) to promote the safety of patients and personnel. Assumes the responsibility for the unit preventative maintenance by cleaning, maintaining and reporting malfunctions in equipment, workstations and patient care areas to the registered nurse"]
