The position is organizationally under Surgical Service at VAPAHCS. This complex service is comprised of multiple surgical specialties, with an authorized staffing level that includes physicians, other licensed clinical providers, clinical support staff, and administrative staff. Surgical Service encompasses the following functional programs/sections: Cardiothoracic Surgery, General Surgery, Gynecology, Plastic & Hand Reconstructive Surgery, Neurosurgery, Ophthalmology, Optometry, Orthopedic Surgery, Otolaryngology/Head and Neck, Neurosurgery, Urology, and Vascular Surgery. Services are located primarily at the Palo Alto Division with services also offered at the Livermore Division and the San Jose and Monterey Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs). The Staff Neurosurgery Surgeon will provide evaluation, operative management, and perioperative care of neurosurgery patients including complex and chronic disorders MAJOR DUTIES The incumbent will be responsible for performing operations that require a neurosurgeon. The incumbent will provide expertise and training in neurosurgery surgery. The incumbent will be responsible for evaluation of patients in the neurosurgery clinic, emergency room, intensive care unit, operating room, and from other inpatient services. The incumbent will also supervise trainees including medical students, residents, and fellows in all of these settings. The incumbent will be responsible for sharing on-call coverage twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, in accordance with the call schedule. Practices safety, environmental, and/or infection control methods. Instructs other personnel assigned to health care team on preventive medicine programs and other appropriate medical activities and functions. Supports and enhances VAPAHCS philosophy and goals.
